Archive for January, 2012

About this time last year, a friend of mine contacted me about making a sweater for her. She had seen my very old Princess De sweater hanging in my studio, and asked if I could recreate it for her to match her measurements. She said she wasn’t in a rush and wouldn’t need it until the fall (which I later found out was because they were welcoming a family member, which is still possibly the best news I recevied in 2011!). So in late September when I was home visiting my family, I brought her sweater to her. She had a chance over the weekend to take some pictures and send them along for me to share.

For my LOOOONG time readers you will recognize that it is the same colour that I did my Princess De in. This one is done in Cascade 220, still one of my favourite yarns. Thankfully this time when I knit it I was much more experienced, and I fixed the design issues that the first one had.

The body has intertwining cables that run down the front of the sweater, through an empire waist ribbing section, and onto the bodice. The sleeves have the same style of winding cable as well. A short row style shoulder ends in more ribbing.

I think Moni looks fabulous in it (this does not look like the body of a woman who had a baby a few short months ago). I hope that it keeps her warm and cozy for years to come!

Thank you Jay and Moni for sending along the pictures, much appreciated!

(A few people have in the past asked if this is a pattern that I am going to write up – what I realized when knitting it for what was actually the third time, is that it just doesn’t lend itself to a well written, easy to follow pattern. And I do not have the writing skill needed to make it workable. So for now, it will just stay as photos! Thank you all for your interest though, it makes a girl feel good).

Last week TJ and I were lucky enough to go head down to Florida to stay with my MIL, who has rented a condo for the month of January. B lives in Ontario, and as anyone from there knows, Ontario in January is usually pretty rough. So it is not uncommon for retired folks in the area to head to Florida for the winter (they are affectionately called Snowbirds). I was very happy to become a snowbird and head down for a week of sun and time spent with T and B. While we were waiting for our flight, and during the flight itself, I got started on a new pair of socks. This is how long the flight from Roanoke to St. Pete’s is in sock knitting:

Once we arrived, we took the islands free trolley out for supper, but not before enjoying the sunset.

We tried to do as many things as possible while there, while still getting a chance to relax and soak up the sun. The second day went to a Tampa Bay Lightening Game….

…where I of course knitted while watching the warm up (I put it away once the game starts – don’t want to miss anything!). Third day was outlet shopping (c’mon, it’s Florida, you gotta outlet shop) which was fine because it rained for a good portion of the day. We checked out the Dali museum in Tampa, which I would definitely suggest seeing, even if you are not a big Dali fan. It wasn’t in our original plans, but we decided on Friday to go to Disney for the day. T and B used to go all the time when he was a kid, but I had only been once with T before, and never to the Magic Kingdom.

It was wonderful! We had the best day of weather on the whole trip, did basically every ride (that was open anyway), watched the fireworks and parades. The whole shebang. 9am-9pm+. I even have a war wound to prove I was there (a woman ran up the back of my ankle with her stroller not once, but twice, and left me bleeding and bruised. Barely said sorry as she whipped right on by. Thankfully the nurses at the first aid centre are super nice and have a good sense of humour about the “stroller tanks”). But other than that little distraction it was the perfect day. I totally recommend going in mid January if you can – there were no crowds at all!

We did have a few beach days, while being careful with the sun. The sunsets were amazing. That is one of the things I love about staying on the Gulf side.

I even started a new cross stitch while I was there (another Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery design. I changed up the colours though).

I am quite a bit further along on that now, and I am done the first sock and have started the second. It was a great week to do some crafting for me! Most of all though, I was so happy to spend some time with these crazy kids.

I just wish the rest of my family could have been there too!

Anyone else been on vacation lately? Anywhere warm and sunny? Cold and snowy?

St. Pete Beach on Dwellable

A week or so back I signed up for Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery’s Dessert of the Month. It was only $10, and I will get 12 little cross-stitched dessert patterns over the course of the year. (On top of that Amanda is such a neat person that I couldn’t resist. You must go check out her blog. Hi Amanda!) The patterns are tiny, so I knew it was something I could squeak in over an evening. The first pattern came out on Wednesday and I think I actually made an out loud “squeek!” when I saw it. So. dang. cute.

It’s a little champagne truffle! Isn’t that adorable? I stitched on a natural coloured 32 count linen (thanks Becky!) and used DMC floss. I didn’t have the exact colours that the pattern called for in some cases, but it was pretty darn close. And Becky suggested that I hold a sparkly blending filament in with the floss. I think some people are using Cosmo floss, which has some metallic options, but I am hoping to keep this project as inexpensive as possible. I have so much floss in the stash, I really don’t want to add to it. So at $1.65 for 50m of filament (which I can add to any colour) I was sold. I added it to the white and the pink, which is difficult to see in this picture. In real life though it has just a hint of sparkle when you move it.

I can’t wait to see what next month brings!

Well, one bird I suppose.

Heh heh. I made this guy for my MIL for Christmas from this awesome tutorial. I totally want to make more of them. I was giggling like an idiot while I stitched.

Blog upgrades are all done, I think. Thank you for your feedback! Let me know if anything seems wonky or out of whack.

Heh. Angry Bird. Ba-caw!

Well, in the end I fell a little short of my goal. I am pretty happy with what I did manage to accomplish though. Click on any month label to see the detailed post.

May – my first cheat – not quite a sweater this month

June

July – I did a cardi for my MIL this month, but it is way too big. I still need to fix it for her (i.e. reknit it!)

August

September – I did a custom sweater for a friend of mine, but no pictures are available yet. Soon I hope!

October

November and December saw me knit 2 pairs of socks and 4 baby hats. Yup. That would be where it all went to pieces. I had good intentions of catching up and knitting the Shapely Boyfriend sweater over Christmas, but I think my brain just crashed after all the lead up to the holidays.

Luckily though today has brought me a pattern that has me feeling passionate about knitting again! Did you see Fuse from Wool People 2? Oh my. I love it! I am trying to decide if I want to spend some birthday money on some Shelter to knit it out of. Since I did my kerchief, I have been thinking about ordering a sweaters worth. This might just be the pattern that pushes me over the edge! I love that feeling when you see a pattern and think “I must cast on THIS INSTANT”. Has anyone else had a pattern that has spoken to them? Knitting or otherwise?

PS – I am test running a new theme on the blog. What do you think?
